Meet the Philatelic Federation

The emblem of the Philatelic Federation stylises a uniquely South African feature of early postal history, a postal stone. In the 1600s shipping fleets plying between Europe and the East Indies left letters for the next passing fleet under stones on the shores of Table Bay, marking the stones with inscriptions like “Hier onder leggen brieven van …” (Hereunder lies letters from…).

The logo symbolises the stone with letter underneath lying on the ground. A number of postal stones may be seen in the Iziko Museum in Cape Town.
