South African stamps 2017 

Information on new stamps issues has been provided by Philatelic Services, a division of the South African Post Office Ltd

3 January 2017           50th anniversary of the Krugerrand

A gummed sheetlet was issued with three se-tenant stamps for the international airmail letter rate of R8.40.  The stamps depict the one ounce gold coin in the original design of 1967 and the revised designs of 2000 and 2017.

17 March 2017            Centenary of Fort Hare University

            The University of Fort Hare had its origin in the South African Native College, which opened in February 2016 with 22 students.

            A sheet with ten stamps for the domestic letter rate (R3.60) was issued.  The stamps depict :

            Prof D D T Jabavu, educationalist

            The centenary logo

            Prof Z K Matthews, the first graduate

            The inaugural South Africa Inter-State Native College Committee

            Collage of names of alumni

            Modern building for Nursing Sciences

            Christian Union Hall, circa 1930

            The university blazer

            Grave and monument to Dr James Stuart

            Delegates to the inter-state native convention, convened to petition for the college (this is a panorama format stamp).

20 April 2017   Contemporary South African architecture

A sheet was issued with 5 gummed stamps for the international small airmail letter rate of R9.15.  The stamps show views of the following structures –

                        Constitutional Court

                        Freedom Park

                        Mpumalanga Legislative Building

                        Mapungubwe interpretation centre

                        Seed Library, Alexandra.

18 May 2017   Birds (bee-eaters)

A sheet with 5 self-adhesive stamps was issued with the rate indicated as B4, being the large envelope size internal rate of R9.55.  The stamps show the following birds –

            Merops apiaster, European bee-eater, Europese byvreter

            Merops pusillus, little bee-beater, kleinbyvreter

            Merops nubicoides, carmine bee-eater, rooiborsbyvreter

            Merops bullockoides, white-fronted bee-eater, rooikeelbyvreter

            Merops hirundineus, swallowtailed bee-eater, swaelstertbyvreter 

9 June 2017    “Big 5” (animals) booklet reprint

Being a reprint, technically this is not a new issue.

12 July 2017    ‘Bees for Africa”

The issue comprises a sheetlet of six self-adhesive stamps (three designs), the rate being for international small airmail letters (R9.15).

10 August 2017           National Parks (3rd set in series)

Five panorama-size stamps for the inland rate for small registered letters, being R27.30.   The landscapes show –

Golden Gate Highland National Park

Garden Route (Tsitsikamma) National Park (seascape with aloes)

Camdeboo National Park (view from Valley of Desolation)

Table Mountain National Park (Twelve Apostles on Atlantic seaboard)

8 September 2018   Homo naledi

   A standard domestic rate stamp (R3.90) was issued in a sheetlet to mark the discovery of prehistoric remains in the Sterkfontein “Cradle of Mankind” World Heritage Site.

26 September 2017    Winnie Madikzela-Mandela

   A sheetlet was issued to honour Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, activist and former wife of Nelson Mandela.  The stamp is for the standard inland letter rate of R3.90.

18 October 2017 - “Street wear” (fashion) – this issue has been scrapped.

7 November 2018 – Helen Suzman centenary

     A standard domestic rate stamp (R3.90) was issued in a sheetlet to mark the centenary of the birth of the celebrated opposition member if the South African Parliament, Helen Suzman.

1 December 2017 – 50th anniversary of the world’s first heart transplant.

A standard domestic rate stamp (R3.90) in a sheetlet was due for issue to mark the 50th anniversary of the world’s first heart transplant, in Cape Town in 1967. 

The sheetlet was actually issued on 21 May 2018 (postage R4.20).
